AMS Students 2008 - 2009

Supervisor and CEBU Support Guidelines for AMS Students

The following levels of in principle support can be expected from CEBU staff for AMS students:

  1. Training in research methodology provided during fortnightly 2 hour sessions in Semester 1.
  2. Access to training in Stata and EpiData
  3. One-to-one consultations (e.g. to provide advice on methodological issues, planning of data management and analysis).  It is expected that where these are required, the student's supervisor attend at least the first consultation.  Depending on the complexity of the project, supervisors may need to also attend subsequent consultations with the student.  This approach is intended to prevent miscommunication between student, supervisor and CEBU staff, and to improve efficiency by avoiding the need to re-book consultations to gain additional information from supervisors.
  4. For simple data entry, data cleaning and preliminary data analysis, it is expected that students undertake in the first instance to learn the appropriate tools (e.g. EpiData, Stata) and to conduct this themselves.  If additional help is required, students should book an appointment with CEBU staff through CEBU's administrator (9345 6368).  However, they are expected to conduct this work themselves following the provision of advice.  This in the best interest of the personal development of the student, and is usually necessary in order for students to claim full authorship of the work they submit for assessment.  It is also necessary in order to ensure fair allocation of access to CEBU resources.
  5. For complex data analysis, CEBU staff may be contracted to assist or undertake this work by mutual consent between the supervisor and CEBU staff.  Where appropriate (e.g. funded studies, extensive work required) payment of an hourly (student) rate may be sough for CEBU staff time.

Initial Presentation of Projects

Each student must present an outline of their project. The presentation should cover the main aspects of the project:

  • what is the research question
  • what is the study design
  • how will data be collected
  • what is actually being measured
  • what are the proposed timelines

Suggested time for each presentation is 10 minutes.  Each student will be allocated 20 minutes to allow enough time for feedback from CEBU staff.  Supervisors are required to be present at these presentations.

All students are encouraged to attend these presentations.

Presentations are to be held on the 4th floor, Front Entry Building on the following dates and times:
